Essential CPD - Delivering Spiritual Care

When: 7th June 2010

Where: Iris Murdoch Building, University of Stirling

Who For:
- Those responsible for ensuring that spiritual needs are met
- Care workers in daily contact with people with dementia
- Visitors to care homes, such as chaplains, who have a particular but not exclusive contribution to make

What are the benefits
There is great uncertainty about what is meant by spiritual care and who should provide it. There is a common assumption that it is the same as religious care and as most care staff would not regard themselves as religious there is a reluctance to address the issue. But spiritual care is an important part of holistic care and as such it becomes the concern of all who provide care on a daily basis.

Timetable
9.30am - Coffee and registration
10-12.30 - What is the experience of dementia? What needs do people with dementia have? What do we mean by spiritual care?
12.30 - Lunch
1.30-4pm - Who should provide spiritual care? When should it be provided and how?

Teaching methods: Short formal presentations; handouts; discussion; DVD

Why should employer pay: The Scottish Government recognises that spirituality is of importance in the lives of people within the Health Service (HDL 2002 76) and there is a statutory requirement to meet the spiritual needs of residents in care homes.

Trainer: Malcolm Goldsmith was formerly a Research Fellow at the DSDC. He is the author of Hearing the Voice of People with Dementia and In a Strange Land, people with dementia and the local church.

Cost: £125
