The Woman from the North - NEW
by Bernard MacLaverty
The Woman from the North is a moving drama which goes to the human heart of old age and its anxieties.
It is the story of Cassie (The Woman from the North) who has been placed in a home in Dublin by her only son (Christopher) after he finds himself in a dilemma. His mother has begun to neglect herself. He has a good job in England and cannot come home to look after her so he makes the effort to have his mother assessed by those most qualified to do so - the medical profession. Can she live on her own? And if not is there a humane alternative?
Bernard MacLaverty wrote this story as 'The Assessment' in his most recent collection of stories Matters of Life & Death'. But the voice of the old woman intrigued him and he wrote the story as a radio play The Woman from the North. It is a poignant story of a journey through assessment from the viewpoint of the person with dementia.
